I am 44 years old, and work out drug free. As someone who is moving into intermediate bodybuilding, I wanted a video that I could watch and learn from at my leisure, that incorporated:
1) promotion of natural bodybuilding.
2) was made by someone who had real long term experience with real long term success as a natural bodybuilder.
3) demonstrated a complete workout from the 4 day split/recovery week that I have already been sold on in my own experience, and the experience of others (cf. Dugdale, Furci, Yates, Aceto etc.).
4) would teach me some things I didn't know that I could and would actually utilize in my own routine.
5) was reasonably priced.
"Real Muscle" turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.
In the DVD, John Hansen gives a brief explanation and demonstration of each exercise he is about to perform. Then immediately, John is filmed doing his actual routine. I like this. Another thing that I like about the DVD, is the fact that John explains his warm-up, set, and rep scheme at the outset of each exercise. This way, his exact routine can be written down to be copied by anyone.
There are so many things that I have learned from this video, that I have applied to my own routine, that I hardly know where to begin. Some of the things I have learned are overt, some are subtle. Having limited training advice at the gym where I work out, some exercise concepts that I have read in books and articles, have been rather nebulous. Watching John work out in real world demonstrations cleared a lot of things up for me. For example, I have read of controlled, strict reps, and I have read of moving a bit with assistance from other muscles. The concept of slight cheating made sense, but was still a bit esoteric to me. After I saw John exercise, I now realize what people mean in the articles when they say that a little movement of the body is good to a certain degree when performing an exercise. I had to see what someone with experience and results does with this, and now I understand exactly what such statements mean. I now have confidence in going a little heavier with a slight bit of body movement, whereas before I was worried that I would not be strict enough in my form.
Such things as what exercises to use, standing against the incline bench on incline DB curls, curling across the chest, incline for french press, and on and on and on, are just a few of the multitudes of techniques that I learned from and appreciate greatly.
For me, this video is more for watching and learning than listening and learning. I can now watch someone who knows what they are doing, instead of all the people around me at my gym who keep giving out piles of unneeded, ineffective, and wrong advice.
